Delighted and overwhelmed, Lisa Buchan and her partner Glenn Wigley, of Waikawa Glen Olive Oil, won gold at the prestigious New York International Olive Oil Competition for their 2020 blend.

With a record 1,100 entries from 28 countries, the New York competition is considered one of the most prestigious in the world with Waikawa Glen of Manakau, just north of Ōtaki, among six New Zealand entries to participate and win. a medal.

Since 2017, Olives New Zealand has selected the best winning entries from the New Zealand competition to enter the New York competition.

After winning the best in show reserve store award at the New Zealand Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards as well as several other awards, Olives New Zealand entered Waikawa Glen in the New York competition.

Each year, gold medals have been awarded and for the first time an organic New Zealand extra virgin olive oil has been listed by Waikawa Glen.

Registered as organic and committed to the principles of sustainable growth, Waikawa Glen is a grove of approximately 500 trees.

The conversion to organic five years ago, and certification last year after completing an organic certification program, has shown that using organic principles can be successful.

“We converted to organic about five years ago in the olive grove,” Lisa said.

“This means that instead of spraying under the trees, we mow frequently to reduce humidity, and we mulch our prunings in the ground.

“A key change we’ve noticed since we stopped spraying the herbicide is that we no longer get all the weeds and thistles under the trees.”

Their award-winning oil, a Boutique Medium Blend, was judged against other organic blends of medium intensity and received a Gold Medal, which refers to excellence in multiple dimensions of quality.

“The price was a surprise because 2020 was only our third year of harvest.

“Although our fellow producers liked our three oils during our regional tasting, we didn’t realize how good they were until we won the Olives New Zealand and Royal Easter Show awards. ‘Auckland.

“We were thrilled and overwhelmed to win the gold – although we already had a lot of faith in the New Zealand Olives Association judges’ assessment that we were in the top league.”

All the applications sent to New York by Olives New Zealand were rewarded.

From Wairarapa, Loopline Olives won two gold medals, Olive Black and Juno Olives each winning one gold medal. Bay of Plenty sapphire olives won the silver medal.
