Proteas Test skipper Dean Elgar received a resounding endorsement from opening partner Aiden Markram after starting his tenure with an away win.
Dean Elgar “the perfect man for the job”
Markram says that Elgar’s straightforward leadership style is exactly what the inexperienced Proteas team needs.
“Dean has been brilliant as a captain for three weeks now and it’s great to have someone experienced like him to lead us, a fairly young team,” said Markram.
“He’s realigned everyone and is leading these standards which will lead to good results more often than not.
“It’s black or white with Dean. You always know where you are at and he’s the perfect man for the job right now.
A long time to come
The Proteas’ victory over the West Indies was their first on foreign soil in the cricket test in nearly four years, and Markam hopes the team can build on the result and learn to overcome the challenges of the foreign conditions.
The team had to do without Temba Bavuma’s experience for the first test which saw the Proteas name two debutants in their XI.
“It’s been a while to come and it’s going to give some conviction back that we can still compete away,” said Markram.
“We encountered a lot of foreign things that we had to overcome, like a strong breeze on the ground, and at one end it was a pretty tough race for the bowlers in the wind, and they had a different ball than what they are used to it.
“But for all of us, the focus was just on getting your job done, with no excuses and emptying the tank. Conditions were tough, but hopefully now we can win in foreign conditions more consistently. “
The Test series will be decided when the West Indies face the Proteas in Saint Lucia from Friday.
